Best Rugged Camera For Tough Waters
As an urban adventurer, I tend to move a lot. And when I do, it’s often done in a quick manner and at a frenetic pace. I get my fair share of bumps and bruises along the way, I take a couple of falls and scrape my skin several times before calling it a perfect day.
This is what I do and I’m very good at it.
I get to experience things you normally wouldn’t and see places from a different perspective. It may require a little bit of struggle but once you reach your destination, it will all be worth it.
Having a highly active lifestyle means, I have to dress the part as normal clothes just won’t do. And it also extends to the tools and gadgets I bring along with me. This is one of the most important things as you don’t want to be on top of that mountain and realize your camera no longer functions because you dropped it earlier while climbing.
So, we’re going to take a look at the 5 best rugged cameras offered in the market today.

Best Rugged Camera Candidates
Canon Powershot D30
Let’s start out with the Canon Power Shot D30. One look at this camera and you’ll know it’s not an ordinary point and shoot camera. It has the prerequisite rubber cladding signifying that it can take a few bumps along the way. So, we have durability and ruggedness checked.
But, what about its performance?
Well, this camera doesn’t shirk from the normal duties expected from a gadget manufactured by this company.
It has the prerequisite 12MP to take fantastic photos and can zoom in optically at 5x the original size. Lenses are at a respectable 28-140mm which should be more than enough to take as much of the environment you’re in as possible. It also has optical image stabilization for when things get a little shaky just so you don’t have blurred pics as a result.
It can be dropped at a height of 6.5 feet and can survive being submerged up to 82 feet of water. That’s for your peace of mind when you bring this camera to parts no other camera would be able to handle.
Nikon COOLPIX AW130 Waterproof Digital Camera
Although Nikon is the preferred brand for DSLR users, they also have a line of point and shooters that can survive the apocalypse. And it has Wi-Fi to boot!
As, it claims, it is waterproof up to 100 feet of water and can survive a fall from a slightly higher altitude of 7 feet. Since it’s a Nikon, it comes fully equipped with Nikkor lenses with 5x optical zoom.
This camera is also designed to survive freezing points up to 14 degrees Fahrenheit and because I know you like taking pictures on the go, let me just mention that it can take burst shots of up to 5 pics per second. Take enough in one sitting and you could fashion a short film out of it.
Yes, it comes in all colors but Blue just seems to be the right color for this guy.
Fujifilm FinePix XP90 Yellow Waterproof digital camera (Yellow)
Aside from the color blue, I like my cameras brightly hued. That’s because I’m a klutz and I sometimes fumble in the dark and with FujiFilm’s bright yellow body, it’s easy for me to spot where it is at near pitch black darkness.
Aside from that admission, let me tell you the biggest reason why I got this: it has 16MP and that’s one of the highest pixel count for any of the rugged cameras featured here.
Just don’t drop this on the ground or in a large body of water as it can only survive a fall at 5 feet and can only be submerged up to 50ft. Sometimes you have to trade some things for great features. This is possibly the best rugged point and shoot camera on the market.
Olympus TG-870 Tough Waterproof Digital Camera (Green)
Want something tough? Well, this camera advertises that it is. and it can survive a crushing force of 220 pounds! So, if you happen to sit on it or fall on it in one of your trips, you won’t have to worry about ruining it with your weight.
All other features are pretty standard on this camera with up to 50 feet waterproof guarantee, can fall from a height of 7 feet and won’t freeze at a temperature as low as 14 F.
It’s color is a bit of an issue though if you want to bring it with you in the woods as it can easily blend in with the Flora. Other than that, if you’re an urban adventurer, it won’t be an issue.
Panasonic DMC-FT5A 16.1 MP Waterproof Digital Camera
There’s not much to say about the Panasonic DMC-FT5A as it has pretty standard features you’d expect from a rugged camera.
As the name claims, it is waterproof and will survive a fall from a reasonable height. It comes in many colors but as you may have already noticed, I like the color blue the most.
It does have 16MP on it which is a really good thing though. Other than that, you can expect it to be a trustworthy companion on your adventures. It’s not the type of camera that will back out when faced with difficult situations.
In conclusion, if I had to pick one to bring with me at all times, I’d have to pick the Nikon COOLPIX AW130 as it has the best specs amongst the bunch. And not only that, the NIklkor lenses lends well to great images captured on this nifty little gadget.
It can survive harsher conditions than the Canon and basically has more MPs to brag about. Pictures taken with this point and shooter come out with vivid details and high color quality making them perfect for preserving memories.
Lastly, Nikon is a trusted brand and they do produce the best DSLRs and I bet they also made it a point to come out with the best rugged cameras for urban adventurers like you and me.
Oh, and it’s blue.
